How Winter Sets the Tone for a Year of Books

Welcome to Reading Resolution — a series for parents who want to raise readers without pressure, perfection, or power struggles. Around here, we believe reading counts even when it’s messy, silly, or squeezed in between real life. One book at a time is more than enough.

Winter has a funny way of slowing everything down. The days are shorter, schedules feel a little quieter, and suddenly there’s more time for cozy moments at home. That’s why winter is actually the perfect season to start something that lasts all year — like a reading habit that doesn’t feel forced.

Instead of trying to do all the reading things at once, what if you approached reading the same way we handle real life best… slowly?

One Month. One Type of Book. That’s It.

A Year of Reading doesn’t mean buying every book at once or turning your living room into a library overnight. It’s much simpler than that.

The idea is to add one new type of book each month — intentionally, gently, and with joy.

Some months might focus on:

  • Flap books for curious little hands

  • Picture books that spark imagination

  • Early readers for growing confidence

  • Feelings-focused stories to support emotional growth

  • Nonfiction and fact books for curious minds

Other months might bring:

  • Problem-solving and logic books

  • Interactive or hands-on learning books

  • STEAM activities and creative challenges

  • Chapter books for longer attention spans

There’s no rush. No schedule to “keep up with.” Just a steady rhythm that builds naturally over time.

Why This Works (Especially for Busy Families)

Kids thrive on variety, but they also thrive on familiarity. Adding one new type of book each month keeps reading fresh without overwhelming kids — or parents.

By December, you haven’t just collected books. You’ve built:

  • A well-rounded home library

  • A reading habit that fits your family

  • Confidence in choosing books that actually work

And maybe most importantly, you’ve removed the pressure. Reading becomes something you do together, not something to check off a list.

Making Reading Feel Doable (Not Like Homework)

Some days reading looks like a long bedtime story. Other days it’s flipping through a flap book on the couch or laughing through a silly picture book during snack time. It all counts.

This approach is one reason I love recommending PaperPie books to families. They’re designed to meet kids at different stages and interests, which makes it easier to rotate new types of books into your home without stress.

You don’t need more books — you need the right books, at the right time.

Start Where You Are

If winter is where you’re starting, that’s perfect. Cozy moments, warm blankets, and shared stories create the foundation for everything that comes next.

A year of reading doesn’t start with a grand plan.It starts with one book, one month, one cozy moment at a time.

This post is part of the Reading Resolution series, created to help families build a love of reading all year long. In the next post, we’ll dive into another simple way to make reading stick — without pressure or perfection. Stay tuned… we’re turning the page together.
