Beating the Summer Slide

School's out for SUMMER! Woo Hoo! No more homework, no more books.... wait... no books? That doesn't sound good. Over the Summer, students lose some of the skills they have acquired during the school year. This can include math computational skills and reading skills. It can take up to 6 weeks of the new school year to re-learn those skills. Luckily, there is a way to STOP the Summer slide! It's as easy as READING! Reading just 2-3 hours over the course of the week is enough to combat this learning loss!

Ok, reading. Got it. Does any type of reading count? Yes! Fiction and Non-Fiction books are both great, but you can also reap the benefits from coloring books, picture books and sticker books!

Ok - so books are the answer to beating the Summer slide - how can we come up with a plan? It's as easy as 1,2,3.

1 - Start a reading list. Let your child be the guide. Let them pick out the books that they are interested in!

2 - Read something every day. Newspaper, magazines, graphic novels, picture books... they all count!

3 - Keep reading aloud. Nothing beats the quality time spent together reading a book! If you have an older reader, maybe take turns reading pages or chapters to keep them engaged and not overwhelmed!

I hope you found this info helpful! I would love to curate a list of books that your reader would love to dive into this summer! Send me a message and we can work on beating the Summer slide together!
