Summer is here, and that signals the start of family adventures filled with sunshine and—most importantly—reading! The Reading Trail program is new this season, creating a vibrant connection between local businesses, families, and engaging stories. This exciting initiative not only promotes reading but also helps combat the "summer slide," where children can lose up to 30% of their academic skills during the break. So, gather your family and prepare for a summer packed with adventures in reading and exploration!
What is The Reading Trail Program?
The Reading Trail program is an exciting summer opportunity that encourages families to explore literature while visiting local businesses. By sponsoring various stops along the trail, local businesses play a crucial role in their community while attracting families looking for enjoyable summer activities.
At each designated stop on the Reading Trail, families can dive into a specially chosen picture book or a chapter from the same chapter book. This consistency means that families can pick up right where they left off, whether they are stopping for a quick read or planning a longer stay.
As you travel along the trail, you’ll collect stamps in your Reading Trail Maps at each stop. This not only brings a sense of excitement and achievement but also emphasizes the joys of reading as families bond over stories together.
How Does it Work?
Participating in the Reading Trail program is simple and fun. Here’s how you can join the adventure:
Register: Kick off your summer by registering for the program.
Connect Online: Join our Facebook Group to connect with other families. Share experiences, tips, and your excitement throughout the program.
Visit Local Sponsor Stops: Between June 1 and July 31, visit different local sponsor stops along the trail. Each stop is an opportunity to read and accumulate stamps. See the stops on the map HERE.
Claim Your Prize: Complete the program and collect your participation prize at our Book Fair from August 4-8 at Arboro Empowered. Plus, you’ll be entered into a grand prize drawing, which adds an extra layer of excitement!
The Rewards of Participation
One of the most exciting aspects of the Reading Trail program is the rewards you earn by collecting stamps. Families who gather stamps from all the stops can earn a free book! Additionally, those who complete their maps have the chance to win a collection of all the books featured in the program, along with a Family 4-pack of tickets to the Greensboro Science Center and Carousel!
Why is Reading Important?
Maintaining reading habits during summer is essential for children. Studies reveal that kids who do not read over the summer can lose up to a month’s worth of learning by the time they return to school. The Reading Trail program provides an enjoyable way for children to not only retain but also enhance their reading skills during the break.
Reading contributes to vocabulary growth, comprehension, and cognitive skills. It fuels imagination and nurtures creativity. By encouraging families to read together, the Reading Trail helps build lifelong skills that go beyond summer, paving the way for success in education and life.
